About Waters of Mormon

We are a community of Latter-day Saints who, after learning the many challenges in our history and doctrine, seek to remain meaningfully engaged in our faith community. We do so by embracing what Alma described in Mosiah 18: We seek to lift each other’s burdens that they may be light, mourn with those who mourn, and comfort those standing in need of comfort. We seek to reclaim the spiritual unity we have found at the Waters of Mormon by embracing together a thoughtful, loving faith.

The mission of this community, so well explained by what happened at the Waters of Mormon could not better express who we are, and the experience we seek together.

We recognize that in today’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the reference to “Mormon” can be considered “inappropriate.” Yet this name, was clearly beloved to this small group of people who found themselves in the borderlands, struggling with their institutional church of their time. They found something unique in imparting to one another spiritually according to their needs and wants.

And as they lifted each other’s burdens that they may be light, mourned with those who mourned, and provided comfort to those standing in need of comfort, something amazing happened:

“And now it came to pass that all this was done in Mormon, yea, by the waters of Mormon, in the forest that was near the waters of Mormon; yea, the place of Mormon, the waters of Mormon, the forest of Mormon, how beautiful are they to the eyes of them who there came to the knowledge of their Redeemer; yea, and how blessed are they, for they shall sing to his praise forever.”

(Mosiah 18:30).

We seek to have this kind of experience at the Waters of Mormon.

This website and its associated Facebook group are not sponsored in any way by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While we strive to remain constructively engaged with church, we recognize the diversity of each person’s faith journey.

How the website is organized

As you look at our front page, you can see that we speak of “Inspiration”, “resources”, “events”, and “community.”

The Inspiration page includes posts from our community that we feel we can share publicly. It expresses our experience with our faith journey within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, living, as we do, “on the edge of inside.” Not all of our journeys are the same, and we hope that by sharing our unique experiences, we can better lift each other’s burdens that they may be light.

The Resources page includes the Gospel Topics essays, books we like, blogs and articles we read, and podcasts we listen to — all that hopefully provide insight and comfort to our journey of faith within the LDS tradition. The Gospel Topics Essays page itself is a great place to start to familiarize yourself with the concerns and issues that challenge us as members. Before you enter our community, that is, join our closed Facebook group, we really hope you’ll read these important essays to familiarize yourself with the issues we will discuss in our commuitny.

The Books and Articles We Read and Podcasts We Listen To pages are self-explanatory. In general, if we post a book, article, podcast., or podcast episode, we feel that it is helpful for our faith journey, and include a short review with any posting.
